The first model to feature our scaled-down GT (Grand Theater) body shape, the GTe Urban Ash serves up a bold acoustic voice with surprising low-end power and a comfortable feel. Our asymmetrical C-Class bracing adapts the V-Class concept to a smaller body, pushing more volume and sustain along with a boost to this model's bass response. Our responsibly sourced Urban Ash tonewood resonates with sonic character similar to mahogany, with a strong fundamental focus and a woody midrange. The GTe Urban Ash is finished with Urban Sienna stain on the back and sides, and includes ES2 electronics and a durable AeroCase.
Overview
Overview: The latest body shape innovation from Taylor blends the comfortable, accessible feel of a small-bodied guitar with a big, warm acoustic tone that belies its compact frame.
Sits between the GS Mini and Grand Concert in terms of size and scale length
Shorter scale reduces string tension for a slinky, relaxed feel on the fretting hand
Warm, rich low-end response with pristine highs and punchy mids Designed from the ground up to provide a fun, inspiring acoustic experience for players of all styles and skill levels, the Taylor GT responds to a growing desire among acoustic players for a smaller-bodied, all-solid-wood guitar that can stand up and perform musically alongside full-size guitars. Inside, proprietary C-Class bracing architecture, a cantilevered, asymmetrical design informed by our patented V-Class bracing, articulates the soundboard in a unique way to coax a level of low-end warmth not typically possible from a small-bodied acoustic, along with impressive volume and sustain.
To encourage a more relaxed playing experience, the GT was designed with a scale length of 24-?”, which approximates the easier feel of a full-size guitar tuned down a half step from standard. This makes holding notes and chords much easier, helping bring the musical benefits of this affordable all-solid-wood guitar to an audience that includes players of all levels of ability. The choice of scale length makes GT guitars feel as though they’re strung with lighter, .11-gauge strings while still delivering the tonal power of a heavier string on a larger guitar. The fret spacing has also been reduced with the scale length, creating the effect of bringing your hands closer together and making the guitar easier to play. Whether you’re looking for a new all-purpose guitar with the power and resonance of solid woods or you need a more portable acoustic that doesn’t compromise on sound or feel, the GT is a surefire hit.

Sound: Our use of Urban Ash, also known as Shamel or evergreen ash, reflects Taylor’s commitment to finding more sustainable, responsible ways to source tonewoods from within our local region. This ash is supplied by West Coast Arborists, Inc., a company that provides tree maintenance and management services to cities across California. Trees that eventually need to be removed due to age, safety concerns and other factors traditionally have had very little end-of-life market value. Our use of Urban Ash can create more value for these trees and support efforts to re-green city infrastructure.
Tonally, Urban Ash’s properties—comparable to high-quality Honduran mahogany—make it a strong contender as a high-grade guitar wood of the future. With its focused, fundamental-strong voice, it produces clean notes mostly free of ringing overtones—the note you play is the note you’ll hear. This makes it supremely adaptable to the particular style of the player. Compared to the “swamp” ash used by electric guitar makers, this species is heavier, denser and more resonant, but not nearly as heavy as the Northern ash used for baseball bats.
Goes Well With: Fingerstyle players seeking an articulate sound unclouded by overtones, or generalists looking for an all-purpose sound that can be molded to perform across genres and styles. It’s also a versatile tonewood option for singer-songwriters and players looking to cut through a mix with a group of musicians.
Overview: As a guitar soundboard, or top, Sitka spruce is the tonewood standard of the modern era. It’s used on 85-90 percent of the guitars that Taylor makes. Its combination of strength and elasticity translates into a broad dynamic range, yielding crisp articulation and allowing for everything from aggressive strumming and flatpicking to fingerpicking. Sitka spruce is Bob Taylor’s personal favorite for an all-around great guitar.
Origin: Canada
Goes Well With: All styles of guitars and players.
Expression System® 2
The Taylor Expression System® 2 (ES2) is a revolutionary pickup design that delivers the latest in Taylor’s ongoing innovation in acoustic guitar amplification. The heart of the Expression System 2 is Taylor’s patented behind-the-saddle pickup, which features three uniquely positioned and individually calibrated pickup sensors. The location of the sensors enables a more dynamic range of acoustic sound to be captured than ever before. Together with Taylor’s custom-designed “professional audio”-grade preamp, this system produces exceptional amplified tone and responsiveness. On stage through a PA, plugged into your favorite acoustic amplifier, or direct into recording software, the Expression System 2 faithfully conveys the voice of your Taylor guitar.
Behind the ES2 Design: Rethinking the Piezo Pickup
For decades, piezo-electric transducers have been positioned under the saddle of a guitar based on the long-held belief that the string and top vibration cause the saddle to “bounce” up and down. But Taylor’s electronics team, led by developer David Hosler, discovered that the vertical movement is actually heavily restricted, and that the saddle gets “locked down” due to the string tension’s downward pressure. That’s why a traditional under-saddle pickup with piezo-electric crystals often responds with a sound often characterized as thin, brittle, brash or synthetic, especially with more aggressive playing.
The saddle’s natural range of movement as the guitar is being played is actually back and forth like a pendulum. That revelation led Taylor’s design team to relocate the crystals from under the saddle to behind it. The new positioning enables the crystals to respond more naturally to the guitar’s energy as it is transferred through the saddle. Three pickup sensors are installed behind the saddle, through the bridge, with three tiny Allen screws that calibrate the position of the sensors in relation to the saddle.
Like the original Expression System, the ES2 features the same volume and tone control knobs. This makes it plug-and-play friendly both for artists and live sound mixers.
